Bleuler quotation

Eugen Bleuler`s son Manfred Bleuler, a fellow psychiatrist, wrote in the “Lehrbuch der Psychiatrie” ( 14th edition, 1979)

“Because of this reason the initial description “Dementia praecox” proved to be unacceptable. Therefore, in 1911, E. Bleuler replaced it with schizophrenia (“Schizophrenie=Spaltunsirresein”), because it seemed that the most basic mental disturbances are caused by a lack of unity, a splitting up and separation of thinking, feeling, and the will of the personality. He also didn`t want to include the terms idiocy (“Verblödung”) and dementia (“Demenz”) in the diagnostic term any more because these signs didn`t seem appropriat, even in the most deteriorated of cases. Common symptoms and course of illness were for him insufficient evidence for deciding on a single unit term for the illness. And, this is the reason why he didn`t refer to an illness of schizophrenia, but to a group of schizophrenias.”

(The English translation of the quotation is still under development, for more details see Bleuler quotation in German, the last update of the article was done on 19.09.2009)
